[CIVIL WAR]. AVIRETT, James B. (1835-1912). The Memoirs of General Turner Ashby and His Compeers. Baltimore: Selby & Dulany, 1867. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait of Ashby. 408, [2, blank] pp. Publisher's full green cloth, boards ruled in blind, front board and spine stamped in gilt, brown coated endleaves (spine a bit sunned, minor rubbing, faint soiling to binding, hinges barely starting, text very slightly toned with occasional thumbsoiling, skewed). Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS UNCOMMON BIOGRAPHY OF THIS CONFEDERATE GENERAL WRITTEN BY HIS CHAPLAIN. Avirett was an author, who wrote books that romanticized the antebellum South and the Confederacy. He was the first chaplain commissioned to serve in the Confederate army; at his death, he was ?the last surviving Confederate chaplain." From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy.
