[CIVIL WAR]. [STANTON, Edward M. (1814-1869), subject]. GORHAM, George C. (1832-1909). Life and Public Services of Edward M. Stanton. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899. Large 8vos. Illustrated. 2 volumes. 456; 502 pp. Handsomely bound in modern full burgundy leather, front boards and spines stamped in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endleaves, custom-made burgundy slipcase (minor occasional rubbing to bindings, title-page and tissue-guard of volume I with marginal tear, occasional bumping to fore-edges of text, occasional pencil notes on title-pages, small red gilt morocco labels affixed to each title-page). Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE BIOGRAPHY OF STANTON. Stanton was Lincoln's Secretary of War during the Civil War and had organized the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln's assassination. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 10 x 9 x 4".
