"A very excellent edition; it contains the ancient Scholia, the select notes of various ancient and modern editors... with the editors's own remarks and annotations, in which he has explained the subject of his author in a concise and perspicuous manner" (Dibdin). Pharsalia, Lucan's (39-68 A.D.) great heroic poem on the struggle between Caesar and Pompey after the crossing of the Rubicon, enjoyed great popularity during the Renaissance; in fact it was probably even more popular than Virgil. This is one of the two best quarto variorum editions. The other, which appeared in 1740, adds some notes and removes others so that the serious collector would do well to have both. The editor is Frans van Oudendorp (1696-1761), professor of history and Latin eloquence at the University of Leiden, who also produced esteemed editions of Julius Caesar, Suetonius, Obsequens, Apuleius, and others. There are apparently two issues of this work, one intended to be bound as two volumes. In that issue, p. 505 is blank on the verso, and the next leaf is a singleton with a divisional half-title on the recto and p. 506 on the verso. In the present issue, pp. 505 and 506 occupy sides of the same leaf.
