DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Little Dorrit. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857. Thick 8vo. xiv, 625 pp. With 40 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), including frontispiece and engraved title. Modern half burgundy morocco over red cloth boards, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE WITH SIGNATURE MARK "B2" FOR "2B2" AND "RIGAUD" INSTEAD OF "BLANDOIS" ON PP. 467-474.
Condition
Joints worn with some repairs, and color correction, binding worn, hinges starting, text lightly toned, soiled, some foxing to plates. Very good.
- Provenance
This was one of Dickens' most popular novels. Circulation figures almost equaled the record-breaking numbers of Bleak House (Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 307-330). Smith I, 12. Gimbel A141. Eckel, p. 82.
