Original gilt-lettered brick orange cloth (light rubbing to extremities).Second edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO CONAN DOYLE ?with thanks for many pleasant hours?. Before becoming a writer, Conan Doyle trained as an ophthalmologist where he learned about chemicals, poisons, observation, deductive reasoning, and analysis which found its way into his many Sherlock Holmes novels. Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, often cited as the father of medical neurology, was president of the American Neurological Society and the author of numerous books with psychiatric themes.
