Original printed wrappers (some light soiling to covers, heel bumped with small closed tear to rear cover, small erasure to previous ownership name on upper cover corner).FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the statement below the imprint: ?All copies supplied through George Newnes, Ltd., Southampton St., Strand, W.C.? Doyle once reflected in his autobiography that ?one of the most pleasing and complete episodes in my life was connected with the pamphlet which I wrote upon the methods and objects of our soldiers in South Africa. It was an attempt to stem the extraordinary outbreak of defamation which had broken out in every country? (Memories and Adventures, p. 189). The pamphlet and the success that followed was partly responsible for the offer of knighthood, which the author accepted. Green and Gibson B3a; Locke, p. 9.
