[ENGLISH HISTORY]. CAMDEN, William (1551-1623). Camden's Britannia, Newly Translated into English... London: F. Collins for A. Swalle, 1695. Folio. Illustrated with frontispiece, 50 double-page maps, 9 full-page plates of coins, and numerous intertextual illustrations. Bound in modern brown cloth, brown morocco gilt lettering label on spine. FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION WITH ALL PAGES, MAPS AND PLATES.
Condition
Binding heavily worn, hinges broken, a few gutters broken, some occasional thumbsoiling, foxing in text and on maps, a few leaves with short marginal tears or wear, frontispiece and title-page and following few leaves with central tears or indentations. Interior is quite clean. Fair.
- Provenance
First published in Latin in 1586 and going through several Latin editions in subsequent years before this edition, this book was the first topographical and historical survey of Great Britain. Laid-in is a trimmed and mounted plate from another work, captioned "Britannicus, Tome I," from an unidentified English history.
