Bound in modern half burgundy levant morocco over red cloth boards, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands. A BEAUTIFULLY-PRINTED EARLY BODONI EDITION OF THIS RARE ITALIAN EROTIC POEM.
Spine very lightly sunned, some minor occasional wear to spine and board edges, some leaves with toning at margins. Fine.
Bookplate of collector Robert Wayne Stilwell on fp. Ludovico Vittorio Savioli Fonantana (1729-1804) was a Bolognese aristocrat, and member of the Bologna Academy of Sciences. He is the "best known and most original erotic poet of his time." Amori, which was first published in 1758, was strongly influenced by Ovid, Catullus and Propertius. It "reinterpreted in a classicistic-Rococo vein that effectively combines the classical with a modern style and sensibility" (Oxford Companion to Italian Literature). OCLC lists 6 copies of this edition in American libraries. Brooks 866.
