[HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961), association]. HEMINGWAY, Mary Welsh (1908-1986). Typed Letter Signed. Savoy-Hilton Hotel, NY, Thursday, Oct. 8, 1959. 2 pages on one sheet. Approximately 11 x 8 1/2". Minor rubbing, some corners creased. Fine. An excellent letter with a very personal final paragraph. Addressed: "Dear Ernest - Situation Report:" Signed "Mary Dear B. B. - I hope they have fine pictures in Heaven." With ink notations and 2 lines in Mary's blue ink manuscript. "As we suspected, Topping removed from the house this summer everything except the furniture listed in the inventory Chuck sent us... Topping's wife's father had come up from Hailey and removed the stuff... Since there seems to be nothing sound I can do about the thievery on my own initiative from here, I have done nothing about that...." "The flight from Paris was my first physical contact with our great new world of scientific accomplishment - amazing, wonderful, and somehow on the outer edges of reality. I kept remembering the Nevile Shute book about the pilot taking the British scientist and his daughter along the same route with their stops in Greenland and all the mysticism about ancient cultures... " "I have seen Hotch, George Brown and Georgette here. Hotch wonders if you will do the short recording about which he wrote you for the T. V. Killers. He sweetly took me to see the Ethel Merman show, Gypsy, of Leland - show worthless - but advice Hotch gave me very good..." "The letter you asked me to write you about our personal relations, I find very difficult to do. Too clogged up with emotion and loneliness and heartbreak. The essence of it is that all evidence, as I see it, shows that you have no further use for me in your life. I am therefore beginning to arrange my removal from it, and hope to establish a new life for myself."
