HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph Letter Signed to Arnold Gingrich. Key West, Monday Nov. 19 / 1934. 1 4to page on one 4to leaf. On plain brown paper (was most likely white paper originally) written in pencil. Approximately 11 x 8 1/2". Addressed "Dear Mr G:". Signed "Ernest Hemingway". With original typed mailing envelope - stamped and with cancels.
Letter toned, with some minor occasional soiling, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases, a few short tears at creases, light soiling, upper margin lightly chipped. Some wear, soiling, foxing to envelope. Still, fine.
A LETTER TO GINGRICH, IN WHICH HE MENTIONS WILLIAM SAROYAN, AND WISHES GINGRICH WELL AFTER GINGRICH HAD HIS TONSILS REMOVED. "Hope you like this one. I think that it is damned good. It is all right to kid Seldes [George Seldes (1890-1995) a fellow Paris journalist expatriate with Hemingway - they later became friendly rivals] it helps him to be mentioned. I'm just a builderupper. The Saroyan guy had it coming [William Saroyan (1908-1981) published his breakthrough novel, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze the same year] - wire me how it strikes you - Notes on Life and Letters or A Manuscript Found in a Bottle. Seems O. K. for a title - or doesnt it? Using both I mean - Hope you're feeling better - Having your tonsils out is really a serious operation on act of hemmorage - Be careful with it and take it easy afterwards - Ernest Hemingway / [at bottom and right margin:] ... Finished long book to be [?] 492 Ms. pages 3 days before yesterday. Started another story Sat. Then wrote this piece for you on Sunday. Now its Monday and I'm still broke." Hemingway's article, Notes on Life and Letters or a Manuscript Found in a Bottle appeared in the January 1935 issue of Esquire Magazine. The "long book" mentioned in this letter may be Green Hills of Africa, published in 1935.
