HERRMANN, Alexander (1844 - 96). Herrmann’s Theatre Program. For the 1892 – 93 season, the only year in which Herrmann owned and operated his New York theatre. Bearing an engraved portrait of Herrmann inside the front wrapper. 4to. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED on the front wrapper, “Presented to Thomas C. Worthington 3rd June 7/31 Howard Thurston.” RARE.
Herrmann built his own Theatre at Broadway & 29th Street in Manhattan, but its opening was delayed when the building was destroyed by fire. After the venue finally opened, it quickly proved to be more than he could afford. Herrmann returned to the road, and the playhouse eventually came to be known as the Gaiety Theatre.
Backed with old cloth tape, rear wrapper significantly chipped.
