[vi], 339, [3, ads], [iv], 160, [viii], 84, [2, ads] pp. Contemporary full calf, lacking spine label. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF HOBBES, WITH THE FRONTISPIECE AND FOLDING PLATE, SOMETIMES MISSING FROM OTHER COPIES.
Condition
Binding heavily worn, joints cracking, spine repaired, hinges cracking, fp. damaged, text a bit toned with occasional light soiling. Good.
- Provenance
Hobbes is the author of the important political work, Leviathan (1651 - advocating for a benign monarchy as the best form of government). The first title in this collection, Behemoth, is the follow-up to that work, a contrasting exploration into what happens when the worst abuses of government come to pass. The other tracts in this collection are a response to Archbishop Bramhall's reaction to Leviathan (first published here), an exploration of heresy, and a mathematical treatise.
