BERTRAM, Charles (1853-1907). Isn't It Wonderful? A History of Magic and Mystery. London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., Ltd, 1896. 4to. Illustrated with plates and numerous intertextual illustrations. [302] pp. Publisher's full cream cloth over beveled boards, front board stamped in gilt, rebacked in later white cloth, gilt, later endleaves.
Boards worn, soiled, occasional minor soiling in text. Good. Bookplate of producer, author and collector, John Fisher, on the fp. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE-PAGE: "To C. Nott, Esq. With the "Author's" Kind regards and thanks for kind assistance at [?] Square - 28/Dec. 1903". On the recto of the frontispiece is a later (1956) gift inscription from Dorothy Whitehead (nee Nott,) presumably a descendant of Nott. It is possible that the recipient of the author's inscription is Charles C. Nott, Sr., (1827-1916), Chief Justice of the Court of Claims.
