Japanese Trapunto American Eagle Silk Embroidery. Circa early 20th century. 19 1/4 x 26 3/4". Frame 25 1/2 x 33 1/4 x 1 1/4".
Antique Japanese trapunto silk embroideries were made in Yokohama in the early 20th century and sold as souvenirs to American sailors, particularly during the Great White Fleet tour (circa 1907-1908). These pieces utilize trapunto quilting to add dimension, commonly depicting American eagles (often with glass eyes), flags, the U.S. shield, olive branches, and cherry blossoms.

Age-related wear and tear in silk.
