Woodcut printer's mark on title-page and colophon, and woodcut initials. 720, [28, Index] pp. Bound to style in later full calf, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, six raised bands. FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION OF 43 WORKS BY PHILO OF ALEXANDRIA, AS TRANSLATED FROM GREEK BY SIGMUND GELEN.
Condition
Spine sunned and worn, boards edgeworn, scuffed, soiled, library inkstamps on front endleaves, text occasionally toned, foxed, thumbsoiled, several gutters starting, small ink notation on title-page. Very good.
- Provenance
Philo was a Jewish-Hellenistic philosopher and diplomat from Alexandria, who attempted to combine Moses and Plato into one philosophical system. He was part of a delegation of Alexandrian Jews to Caligula in 40 A. D.
