- Lot Description
LINCOLN, Mary Todd [Wife of Abraham Lincoln (1818-1882)]. Autograph Letter Signed. Brevoort House, [November 30th, no year given, but most likely ca. 1860s ? 1870s]. Addressed ?My Dear Mr. Bennett". One and one-half 8vo pages on monogrammed (?L") mourning stationery, on a folding 4to sheet. Each page approximately 8 x 4 ?". Two horizontal creases, paperclip marks at the top of each page, mild rubbing. Fine. Although it is unknown who Mr. Bennett is, it is possible that it is James Gordon Bennett (1795-1872), the controversial publisher of the New York Herald. ?I am in Town, for only a day or two, + would like greatly to see you before I leave, which I expect to do so tomorrow ? Would it be convenient, + agreeable to you, to come down, on your way to your office, to take breakfast with me tomorrow morning at 10 ? A. M. ? At all events, let me see you whilst I am here ? Kind regards to Mrs. Bennett. Very Sincerely Mary Lincoln Nov 30th". Bennett was an erratic and irascible man, who had a complicated relationship with President and Mrs. Lincoln; at times praising the president, at other times calling for his removal from office. He corresponded with Mrs. Lincoln, using flattery to gain her confidence, and therefore, some insight into what was going on in the White House. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D.
