LUCRETIUS CARUS, Titus (d. 55 B. C.) De Rerun Natura Libri Sex... Paris: Aedibus Rouillii, 1565. Small 8vo. Woodcut-bordered title-page, woodcut initials. 287, [29] pp. Bound without original blanks. Contemporary calf, rebacked with later calf, brown gilt morocco lettering label, three raised bands, later endleaves. THE RARE FIRST "POCKET" EDITION OF LAMBIN'S GREAT LUCRETIUS.
Condition
Spine soiled at top, boards worn, soiled, scuffed, endleaves offset, hinges starting, text dampstained throughout, toned, title-page trimmed close at top, with minor loss of text, some ink markings on title-page. Fair.
- Provenance
This edition was edited by Denis Lambin. Lambin "stimulated a demand for a pocket edition giving the scholar's text without the notes. This demand having come from men who were not only of high rank and famous but also learned...Lambin made haste to satisfy it and carefully reconsidered the text in the light of suggestions he had received from other scholars. The results were printed in 1565 and make the most attractive pocket edition of Lucretius that has ever appeared..." (Gordon 203).
