MATANIA, Fortunino (Italian, 1881-1963). Untitled Original Drawing of a Classical Scene of a Soldier Rescuing Two Women. [N.p., ca. 20th century]. Charcoal on paper, heightened in white. Image depicts a weary soldier after slaughtering several men; two women are present, one gratefully cowering at his feet (this image may possibly be Odysseus slaughtering the suitors of his wife, Penelope). Signed at lower right corner. Sight approximately 9 x 9 ?". Matted and framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 16 x 16 ?". Some light soiling visible to artwork near margins. Near fine. Matania was a prominent illustrator and artist, who first gained notoriety for his realistic World War I artwork. After the war, he worked extensively for magazines and newspapers in Europe and England on a variety of topics, including mythology, royalty, history, etc. Not examined out of frame.
