[NATIVE AMERICANS]. -- [STANLEY, John Mix (1814-1872)]. Stanley?s American Indian Gallery. [New York:] McSpedon & Baker, n.d. [ca. 1849-50]. Broadside (470 x 203 mm), old fold, browning, small hole. In 1842, Stanley traveled the American West and up the Pacific Coast to paint Native American life. In 1849-50, Stanley toured his Indian Gallery along the East Coast. Although Congress declined to purchase his 150 canvases, the paintings remained in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where they were destroyed by fire in 1865.
