PEARCE, Donn (1928-2017). Cool Hand Luke. New York: Charles Scribner?s Sons, [1965]. FIRST EDITION, WARNER BROS. PICTURES STORY DEPARTMENT COPY with their rubberstamp on the front free endpaper (Warner Bros. produced the landmark 1967 prison drama of the same name). The film adaptation of Cool Hand Luke starred Paul Newman and George Kennedy and was directed by Stuart Rosenberg. It was nominated for several Academy Awards, and won for Best Supporting Actor (George Kennedy). The film spawned the line, ?What we?ve got here is a failure to communicate,? one of the most famous movie quotes of all time (#11 on the AFI?s 100 Movie Quotes list).
