This treatise is an attack on previous writings by religious reformer and controversialist John Ponet (1514-1556), who favored priestly marriage. Ponet responded in 1556 with his response, An Apologie Fully Aunsweringe? Gardiner held several prominent posts during Queen Mary I's reign, including Lord Chancellor.
