[SARAGOSSA RIOTS]. SEBASTIAN Y LATRE, Tomas (d. 1792). Relacion individual, y veridica del sucesso acontecido en la ciudad de Zaragoza, el dia 6. de Abril de 1766... Zaragoza: Imprenta del Rey nuestro Señor, 1766. Small 4to. 132 pp. Three folding plates with five tables. Contemporary mottled calf. Gilt spine, with much of the gilt worn away, edges stained red. THE RARE FIRST EDITION.
Condition
H2 torn near gutter and expertly repaired, affecting a few letters. Text a bit wrinkled. Very good and crisp.
- Provenance
Bookplate of poet Miguel Romero y Martinez on fp. This is a history of the peasant uprising at Saragossa, capital of Aragon, in 1766, which followed shortly after the riot of Esquilache in Madrid. The Esquilache riot is famously depicted in a painting by Goya, who witnessed the event. These occurrences were precipitated by a succession of bad years for the harvests and unpopular economic reforms. The Jesuits were said to be behind them, and King Carlos decreed their expulsion shortly thereafter. The tables in this book give information on the men involved in quelling the Saragossa riot and bringing the perpetrators to justice. OCLC lists only 8 copies in North America.
