SHAIKHET, Arkady (Russian, 1898-1959). Arrival of the First Motor Truck in the Heart of the Caucasus Proves Quite an Event. Circa 1910s. Gelatin silver print. Inscribed with the title and "R 57 - U.S.S.R. Caucasus." Various sticker remnants, annotations in pencil, and stamps to reverse. Sheet: 5 x 10".
The introduction of motorized transport in the Caucasus mountains during the 1910s marked a significant shift, signaling the decline of horse-drawn logistics on the region's difficult roads. While early automobiles appeared in the Russian Empire, including Odessa, as early as 1891, the arrival of heavy goods vehicles in the heart of the Caucasus was a major technological milestone.
