The first two works are eighteenth-century studies of Shakespeare. The first is by Whalley, an Oxford-educated schoolmaster who had published a seven-volume set of Ben Jonson's Works (1756). Guthrie, translator and historian, was "more than once referred to by Johnson in terms of some respect..." (DNB). The third work, by the master of Magdalene College, recommends a four-year course of study for a college-going student. The fourth work is a eulogy for Cardinal de Fleury, the effective prime minister under Louis XV.
