SULLIVAN, Edmund J. (British, 1869-1933). ?The Communist Oracle" Original Political Cartoon. [N.p., ca. 1925]. Pen and ink drawing, depicting numerous Bolsheviks hiding behind a huge statue of a Russian-style oracle, and speaking to the masses through the oracle. Signed at lower right corner and captioned by him at the bottom (with a partially obscured note ?see back"). Sight approximately 15 ? x 12 ?". Framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 17 ? x 15". Some soiling, creasing. Very good. On the verso of the frame is a photocopy of the text on the verso of the cartoon: ?The Communist Oracle. ?All of a sudden the Oracle began to talk nonsense ? took to talking [crossed out] answering incoherently and absurdly, so that if anyone consulted it about anything, whatever our Oracle said was a lie." From Krilof's [sic] Russian Fables (drawn with acknowledgements to A. Boyd Houghton's illustration 1869)". Sullivan's work appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers; his book illustrations deviated from his magazine work, as it tended to be heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau movement. Not examined out of frame. From the Collection of Louis A. Irmo. Measurements: 18 x 15 x 2".
