SURAND, Gustave (French, 1860-1937). Original Oil Painting, ?Orphes [sic] charmant les animaux (Hors Concours)" [?Orpheus charming the animals (Out of Competition)"]. [France, ca. 19th century]. Oil on canvas image of Orpheus playing his lyre, his music being enjoyed by a variety of enchanted wild animals (lions, tigers, leopards, birds). Signed ?Surand" at lower right corner. Sight approximately 25 x 36". Framed in elaborate gilt plaster frame. Frame size approximately 36 x 47". Minor chipping, and a few small cracks to lower portion of frame. Fine. Not examined out of frame. Surand was a prominent orientalist painter who had apprenticed with Jean-Paul Laurens. After his apprenticeship, he journeyed to Tunisia in 1884 where he painted numerous orientalists. After this time, he began painting one of the major themes of his career ? wild animals.
