[VOYAGES AND TRAVELS]. PETERS, Dr. Carl (1856-1918). New Light on Dark Africa... London: Ward, Lock, and Co., 1891. 4to. Profusely illustrated, including a loose color map housed in rear pocket. 597 pp. Publisher's full green cloth, front board and spine decoratively stamped in black, white, and gilt, black endleaves.
Condition
Light rubbing to binding, corners lightly bumped, some foxing to edges of text-block. Bright and fine, better than usually seen. FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE TRANSLATOR ON THE VERSO OF THE FFEP.: "Mrs. Negroponte with H. W. Dulcken's Kind regards July 6th 1891." Peters was an outspoken advocate of German expansion into Africa, signing treaties with several local chiefs. Peters' German colonists came into conflict with British colonists under Stanley. This book not only has factual material about the land, wildlife and people of the area, it also has chapters on the battles between the German and British colonists.
