Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1917. 8vo. Illustrated. [194], [2, blank] pp. Publisher's full blue cloth, front board stamped in gilt and colors, spine stamped in gilt (spine sunned and edgeworn, light rubbing to boards, text a bit toned with minor occasional soiling, bookplate of historian James Taylor Dunn on the fp.) Fine. THE RARE FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE FFEP.: "To my dear Cousin with love from Maria Brace Kimball". LAID-IN IS AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY SURGEON-GENERAL JAMES B. KIMBALL ON HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE MISSOURI STATIONERY. Letter is dated May [?] 28, 1900 and is addressed to Hamilton B. Tompkins (with mailing envelope; letter folded, some soiling at upper left corner). James B. Kimball traveled with General Stanley and General Custer on the Yellowstone Expedition in 1873, becoming close friends with Custer. The author of this book was Kimball's spouse. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy.
