Shiro Kuramata, H. 150 x 36 x 40 cm. Made by Memphis, Milan. Wood, painted black, silver-yellow and purple. Marked: Maker's label Memphis Milano 1981 (on purple cabinet).
The cabinets were designed for the first exhibition of the Memphis Group, at the Arc 74 showroom in Milan, 1981. Three cabinets in different colours were presented. Ettore Sottsass, who mentored Kuramata invited him personally to join the Memphis group. The objects on display were all named after famous hotels; next to the 'Imperial' cabinets, Kuramata's 'Ritz' writing desk was on view.
