Born in Malawi and now living in a small town near Edinburgh, Alan Macdonald makes Renaissance-style paintings, often incorporating words or phrases, as well as references to contemporary pop culture, that are at once familiar and strange, elegant and amusing. In 2014, Macdonald’s work was featured in REALIZED, a show at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland. The following year he was included in the landmark exhibition REALITY: Modern & Contemporary British Painting at the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich, United Kingdom, alongside Francis Bacon, David Hockney, and other standard bearers of the art world. His paintings are found in numerous private, public and corporate collections.
