Is it sculpture or is it furniture? Wendell Castle once said, enthusiastically, that his work is both. Inspired by the sculpture of Henry Moore and Constantin Brâncuși, among many others, Castle was obsessed with incorporating organic, sculptural forms in his pieces in order to challenge the viewer. In the 1960s, he was the first studio furniture artist to employ the technique of carving and sculpting stacked laminate to produce his desired curved forms. Fast-forward to the mid-aughts when Castle resuscitated and perfected his process with the use of 21st-century technology by incorporating 3D scanning, 3D modeling, and computer-controlled milling. This chair, created in the final phase of this career, is a testament to his refined workmanship and careful study as a master of his craft. Though Castle is no longer with us, he left an indelible mark on the world of makers and studio furniture.
Minor separations at two laminate joints have been invisibly filled in. Two minor scuffs to seat area. Otherwise very good condition.
