A complete and authentic issue of The London Magazine, May 1775, disbound, 56pp. Several items items are contained in this publication including; “Fortitude and Preference of Mind of the North American Indians, When Suffering the Fiery Torturesâ€, over 2 pp., provides several examples of burning at the stake such as, “.. they took a Muskhge warrior .. and condemned him to a fiery torture. He underwent a great deal without showing any concern. His continence were as if he suffered no pain ... he told them he was a very noted warrior and desired to show them that in the act of dying he was still much their superior ...â€, and after capturing another warrior, “The women and children met him at several towns, beat and whipped him in as severe a manner, and at last he condemned to die by fiery torture ...†In separate report AMERICAN AFFAIRS, we have news from Boston, New York and Philadelphia, including One T. Ditson, an inhabitant of the said town, was tarred and feathered and very much abused ...†Then, perhaps the most interesting item is a rare and early foldout map of the Bering Strait and Aleutian Islands featuring the island of "Alaschka," that was published just three years before Captain James Cook visited the region in 1778.Titled "The Northern Archipelago or New Discovered Islands in the Seas of Kamtschatka & Anadir", the map depicts the entire region of the North Atlantic from south of Kamchatka to the Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait itself. It features many islands, names settlements and towns, depicts river systems, shows mountainous regions, and shows a large portion of NE Asia along with a smaller portion of NW North America. Bowen’s words ‘New Discovered Islands’ are used to refer to islands discovered by and known to Europeans, their existence had long been known to indigenous peoples and other earlier explorers. History of the exploration and mapping of this part of the world is fascinating.
