Framed oval copy print, lightly tinted, 8†x 10â€, chest up, in formal clothing, coat, tie, white shirt and hat. The copy print is presented in a 12†x 14-1/4†gesso oval frame. gilded in gold paint. On the reverse is a deaccession label “Peterson’s Military Museum, Acquisition Date, 8-3-1983, Acq# 1576-CW-Photo- Black Soldier.†Accompanying this piece is the consignor’s wonderful adventure story of the purchase of the piece and finally the identification of the sitter. Who is the gentleman? It is William H. Kennard, who enlisted on 3/21/1863 as a Private into "D" Co. Massachusetts 54th Infantry. He was disch disability on 5/29/1865 at Saint Andrew's Parish, SC. After the war, Kennard went West, served five years at Fort Bliss, Texas, and then relocated with his unit to Fort Davis in Arizona Territory. He saw action against the Warm Springs Apache and Mescalero Apache. When his enlistment ran out, Kennard drifted about for a few months before responding to the newspaper ad in the summer of 1874 and becoming the marshal of Yankee Hill, Colorado Territory, at the tidy salary of $100 per month.
