A complete and authentic issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine December 1778, 48, pp. The publication includes the fold out map “Island Of Tobagoâ€. The island of Tobago was a British colony heavily reliant on a plantation economy powered by enslaved people, with British and American raids disrupting the established slave system and the lives of the enslaved. During an American raid in January 1779, enslaved people were taken prisoner alongside their enslavers. Later that same year, an armed British patrol fought against "Maroons," which likely refers to runaway or rebellious slaves, near Man of War Bay. ... plus a second map “A Map of the Island of Dominicaâ€. In 1778, Dominica was taken by the French from the British during the American Revolutionary War. During this period, the French reoccupation brought some disruption to the island's slave system, but slavery continued to be a dominant force in the economy. For instance, French expansion and control over the island led to the construction of new military facilities which utilized slave labor. After the British reoccupied Dominica in 1783, the slave trade resumed, with a large number of slaves arriving in the years that followed. two brief yet important paragraphs including, “The provinces of Jersey and New York were wide open ... Gen. Washington did not seem to show the least disposition to assemble his army...†A second paragraph deals with general Lee Court Martial, “Gen. Lee had been tried on three charges .. on all being found guilty. .. sentenced to one year suspended ...â€
