Very Scarce Maryland Manumission Document, May 24, 1847, Harford County in the State of Maryland, “ ... have released from slavery, liberated, manumitted and set free and by those present, do hereby ... set free my Negro woman Eliza, aged about thirty-five years ... discharged from all manner of service to me, my Executors or administrators for ever. ...†This document was signed by the former slave owner, Alexander Norris. The document also contains the statement of the Justice of the Peace, “... personally appeared Eliza Jane Norris, she being known to us to be the same person who is named as and professing to be the manumitted in the foregoing deed of manumission ... I have hereunder subscribed my name ....â€Reluctantly, Maryland abolished slavery November 1, 1864.
