Self Covering 3pp. Letter written by “Susan†to her aunt “Nancy T. Davis Madison Ga.â€, datelined Edisto Island, Jan. 10, 1849. Susan discusses family affairs, a brother marrying, missing her family. Also mentioning Cholera “is coming nearer and nearer to us. ... She mentions the slaves, “I have a little waiting maid a great trial to my patience. She torments me so & I dislike so to punish any of them.†The year 1849, a period when Edisto Island was dominated by large cotton plantations and the enslaved labor used to cultivate them.
