Copper Token 1-1/4â€, 1841, shows a ship named “Constitution†sailing in a soft sea with full sails in the center. The reverse has the words "MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE" along the edge surrounding the words "NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE" in the center of the reverse with flowers surrounding it and separating the central legend from the peripheral legend. “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute" is a famous American slogan from the late 18th century, originating from the XYZ Affair where French diplomats demanded a bribe from American envoys. Though often attributed to U.S. diplomat Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, the line was actually spoken in a toast by Robert Goodloe Harper, a Congressman from Maryland, to honor the refusal of the bribe.
