Caleb Strong Jr. (1745-1819) was an American lawyer, politician, and Founding Father who served as the sixth and tenth governor of Massachusetts between 1800 and 1807, and again from 1812 until 1816. Strongwasboth elected to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress in 1774. When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, Strong was unable to serve in the military because of his damaged sight, but he was otherwise active in the Patriot cause. Strong was elected as a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the 1787 Constitution. A committed Federalist, Strong opposed the idea of the Electoral College as a means of electing the president, instead supporting the idea that the legislature should choose him.John Avery Jr. (1739-1806) was an American politician and member of the Sons of Liberty who defeated Samuel Adams at the polls to become the 1st Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.When Britain imposed the Intolerable Acts throughout the 1750s and 60s, a great number of men became extremely angry, and began to act violently against British Loyalists in the colonies. Mobs sprung up all over the colonies, reigning terror on those who remained faithful to the crown. One of these groupings would be a secret Boston association known as the The Loyal Nine, composed of elite gentleman. The membership of the Loyal Nine included John Avery. The membership of the Loyal Nine consisted of club secretary John Avery.
