Manuscript document, 8†x 6-1/2†marked (Copy) in large part, “This will certify to the Prize Agent for the officers and crew of the United States Frigate Constitution, Charles Stewart, Esq. Commander. That John Smith, Seaman is entitled to a share of Prize money (according to his class) proceeding from the Capture of the Lord Nelson, Susannah, Cyane, Levant made by the afore said ship under my command, [signed Chs Stewartâ€. It was directed to John McCauley Esq. Philda. Below is the approval, “Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Suffolk St. Boston, March 5th, 1816 - I hereby certify that I have carefully compared the above written copy with the original certified signed by Charles Stewart & find the said copy correct & true.†Signed by “J.E. Smithâ€.Charles Stewart took command on July18, 1813 and struggled to complete the construction and recruitment of a new crew, finally making sail on December 31st. She set course for the West Indies to harass British shipping and had captured five merchant ships and the 14-gun HMS Pictou by late March 1814. She also pursued HMS Columbine and HMS Pique, though both ships escaped after realizing that she was an American frigate.The USS Constitution captured these vessels during its cruise in late 1814 and early 1815. The Lord Nelson was seized in December 1814, the Susannah on February 16, 1815, and the Cyane and Levant were captured in a single engagement four days later, on February 20, 1815. The Treaty of Ghent was signed in December 1814, though it would be February before word reached the United States and the treaty was fully ratified.
