Letter datelined Bladensburg Dec 7, 1860, written to Judge William Hallam Tuck (Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals). In part, “According to promise, I wrote to Mr. Donovan in reference to the Negro man. As yet I have not received any answer from him. From his delay my impression is that he is not buying at this time. ... It would be a great sacrifice to put him on the market at this time. I know that Mr. Donovan and Mr. Campbell has a large number of Negroes in the South, which they bought at high prices. If things are settled to the satisfaction of the South, Negroes will bring the same as usual, but it will not be until the spring. ... It is a great pity to keep the boy in jail all winter.
