Two sheets removed from the Harper’s Weekly, July 13, 1861 issue includes; pg. 442 (the auction image) and pg. 447 (3/4 column description of the auction). This original 1861 wood engraving, published in Harper’s Weekly, depicts a harrowing scene titled “A Slave Auction at the South, from an Original Sketch by Theodore R. Davisâ€.The image shows enslaved men, women, and children being auctioned in front of the Eagle Hotel, surrounded by formally dressed bidders and spectators. Davis’ sketch captures the grim reality of human condition in the antebellum South, with detailed architectural and emotional cues including a seven-star CSA flag..
