Union Prisoner one page letter written by H. Lindsey Pierce who enlisted on 8/21/1862 as an Asst Surgeon into Field & Staff Maryland 5th Infantry. Pierce was was killed 11/5/1863 being shot by one of the Prison Guards, Richmond, VA.Datelined Confederate States Military Prison Hospl, Richmond July 13th, 1863, to his wife Katie. Short letter in full, “I have anxiously expected some word from you but have, as yet, received none. I hope you are well. You must keep up a good heart and tell Mother to do the same. I get along tolerably well, if that will express it. Nothing under heaven will ever separate us again Katie, but death. I hope and pray that we may soon be together, you must write me a few lines. Give my love to Mother, Kiss our little darling for me. Goodbye..â€Dr. Pierce was taken prisoner on June 15, 1863, during the Battle of Winchester and was shot and killed by a prison guard while confined at Libby Prison.
