(2) Japanese Carved Soapstone Dragons. Pair of carved soapstone Japanese dragons. Their short legs and blunted claws give them cute proportions-- the corgis of dragons.
Japanese dragons, known as “ryū” or “tatsu,” are legendary creatures deeply embedded in Japan’s mythology and art, symbolizing power, wisdom, and the forces of nature. Unlike their Western counterparts, Japanese dragons are typically serpentine, wingless, and associated with water—rivers, seas, and rainfall—often revered as benevolent guardians who bring fertility and protection. Rooted in Chinese dragon traditions but uniquely adapted over centuries, they appear in folklore as majestic beings capable of shape-shifting and controlling weather. Frequently depicted with three claws and a fierce yet noble expression, Japanese dragons are common motifs in temples, festivals, tattoos, and traditional paintings, embodying the harmony between strength and spirituality central to Japanese cultural identity.
