(5) Egyptian Turquoise Faience Glazed Ushabti and (1) Hellenistic Terra Cotta Face. Lot of five terra cotta Ancient Greek and Roman Hellenistic artifacts, four small figure pieces, one face in profile. Dated c. 323 BC.
Largest Size: 2 1/2 x 1 in.
Hellenistic art, produced from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE to the Roman conquest in 31 BCE, is marked by its heightened realism, emotional intensity, and cosmopolitan reach compared to the more restrained idealism of earlier Classical Greek art. Sculptors explored dramatic movement, theatrical expressions, and subjects from everyday life alongside depictions of gods and heroes, resulting in masterpieces such as the Laocoön Group and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The period also embraced diversity, reflecting the spread of Greek culture across Egypt, the Near East, and Asia Minor, with local traditions blending into the Greek artistic vocabulary. From monumental architecture to finely crafted jewelry and mosaics, Hellenistic art celebrated both grandeur and intimate detail, leaving a legacy that profoundly influenced Roman and later Western art.
