- Lot Description
African Kuba Congolese Ishen-Maal Pwoom Itok Carved Wooden Mask. A label on the inside identifies the piece using nomenclature that originates when the nation was known as Zaire, from 1971 to 1997. The top has holes where a feather headdress would have sat, and has been strung on the back to hang on a wall.
Size: 6 5/8 x 10 x 5 in.
The Kuba tribe is a diverse confederation of about 19 different ethnic groups, including the influential Bushongo, who historically formed the Kuba Kingdom in the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo around the beginning of the 17th Century. Known for their sophisticated artistry and fearsome weaponry, Kuba culture is renowned for its detailed raffia textiles, intricately carved wooden objects, and masks, all characterized by abstract patterns and technical skill. European contact and the imposition of Belgian rule in the late 19th Century significantly altered the political landscape, although the Kuba strove to maintain their cultural traditions.
