Balinese Lacquered Carved Wood Buddha Head.
Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was a 6th to 5th century BCE spiritual teacher whose insights laid the foundation for Buddhism. Born into royalty in what is now Nepal, he lived a sheltered life until encountering the realities of aging, sickness, and death, which spurred him to renounce his princely life in search of deeper truth. After years of ascetic practice and meditation, he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, discovering the Middle Way—a path between indulgence and deprivation—as well as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, which became central tenets of Buddhist philosophy. Siddhartha spent the rest of his life teaching these principles across northern India, emphasizing compassion, mindfulness, and the cessation of suffering through spiritual awakening. His legacy endures as a symbol of wisdom, peace, and liberation.
