Chinese Qing Dynasty Bronze Seated Quanyin. Chinese Qing Dynasty bronze statue of Quaynyin seated, her hands in her lap, palms up. Impressed mark on base.
Guanyin, also spelled Quan Yin or Kuan Yin, is the bodhisattva of compassion in East Asian Buddhism, revered as a merciful figure who hears the cries of the world and offers aid to those in suffering. Originally based on the Indian bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, Guanyin evolved into a distinctly East Asian deity, often portrayed as a serene, white-robed woman holding a vase of pure water or a willow branch, symbols of healing and grace. She is especially venerated in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese traditions, where she is considered a protector of women, children, sailors, and anyone in need. Guanyin’s image appears in temples, homes, and art across centuries, representing the ideal of boundless compassion and the belief that enlightenment is accessible through kindness and empathy. Her widespread devotion speaks to her role as a spiritual refuge and a symbol of hope and mercy.
