- Lot Description
Brass Maritime Sextant.
Main body is a metal frame with a curved arc, graduated in degrees. It features a telescope for viewing, a movable index arm with mirrors, and a series of colored filters used to protect the eyes when observing the sun.
Size: 11 x 9 x 3 1/2 in.
Maritime sextants are precision navigational instruments used by sailors to measure the angle between celestial bodies—such as the sun, moon, or stars—and the horizon, enabling the determination of latitude and, with additional calculations, longitude. Typically constructed from brass or other corrosion-resistant metals, they feature a graduated arc, mirrors, and a telescope to allow accurate sightings even on a rocking ship. Sextants became essential tools for oceanic navigation from the 18th century onward, revolutionizing sea travel by providing a reliable means to chart position far from land. Beyond their practical use, finely crafted sextants are prized today as collectible instruments, admired for their engineering, historical significance, and role in the golden age of maritime exploration.
