Charles Bird King (1785–1862) was an American portrait artist best known for his detailed and dignified depictions of Native American leaders, commissioned by the U.S. government in the early 19th century. Trained in London under Benjamin West, King brought a refined European technique to his work, which he applied to over a hundred portraits of Indigenous delegates visiting Washington, D.C., many of whom were subjects of Indian Affairs diplomacy. Although his paintings contributed to a visual record of Native American figures during a period of intense displacement and cultural upheaval, King’s work has also been critiqued for romanticizing and sometimes stereotyping his subjects, reflecting the complicated legacy of early American ethnographic art.
