Charles Fazzino was born on December 26th, 1955 in New York City. The son of a Finnish sculptor and an Italian shoe designer, he took his first formal art class as a 7th grader in 1967 and later graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan in 1977 with a BA. He became famous for his three-dimensional silkscreen serigraphs, first shown at the Greenwich Village Art Show that same year. By the early 1980s he obtained international representation with offset lithographs in this style made available through Park West Gallery, and branched out into serigraphy in 1986. He began collaborating with other artists who eventually became a fundamental part of his process, creating a factory environment similar to Andy Warhol’s style, contributing portraits and celebrity likenesses which Fazzino then incorporated into various scenes, using an Exacto knife to shape three-dimensional figures within the plane. Fazzino often equates the process of building up the layers of his artwork to “layering it like a lasagna.” In the 2000s he began to incorporate Swarovski crystals into his pieces to give them a glittering effect. His artwork has been on permanent display in over 20 countries, and he has created site-specific pieces for major events like The Super Bowl, The Grammy Awards, and the Daytime Emmy Awards, with his most recent commissions coming from the United States Olympic Committee in the 2010s and government agencies in the 2020s. Today he is considered one of the seminal post-modern American pop artists, now influencing the urban landscapes, sporting events, and celebrities that first influenced him.
